I’ve always enjoyed reading novellas about a character’s past, it just makes me feel so much more connected to them and usually answers some of the questions that I have about them. I loved reading about Eutau and how he came to be the guardian of Kira! I really enjoyed how I could read about Kira as an infant, toddler and young child. Reading of how Kira struggled for being different really brought me to tears, it just broke me! But at the same time, I loved that Markoff wrote about it because it teaches us that being different is okay and that we are loved by many just the way we are! The character growth of Eutau in this novella was phenomenal! At one point, I did become very angry at him for leaving, but as I kept on reading, I began to understand that it was something that he needed to do so he could understand how much HE needs Kira in his life; maybe even a little more than Kira needs him. Like I said above I really enjoyed this book and it has made me even more excited for the rest of the series, if you have read The Deadbringer I highly recommend you read this novella! It brings the characters into a whole new perspective and baby/toddler Keira is super adorable! And if you have not read The Deadbringer what are you waiting for?!? I had the opportunity to Beta Read To Nurture and Kill and I was very happy to be back in this world and characters that I got t to know in The Deadbringer, which To Nurture and Kill is the prequel to that story.
In To Nurture and Kill we meet a younger Eutau and a very, very young Kira, precisely, when Eutau's sister dies, leaving Kira to his care and how this event changes his life forever. Other characters are introduced and new situations unfold as well.
I loved the story. Markoff's wrting style is so unique, it is just something about it, the way the story is told. The author really cares for her readers to understand the characters, to be invested in the story, it did it for me, I just wanted to keep reading it. A beautifully written book, a fantastic character development, the world described, dark and intriguing and unexpected turns which made my interest in the story grow more.
I also loved how through the pages, the words, we get to see in depth this strong, beautiful and loving relationship between Eutau and Kira. How sincere, honest, real and transparent it is. I think it is amazing the way Eutau loves Kira and how much he cares for him, the feeling that he would do anything to protect him despite Eutau having all these other feelings, regret, sadness, anger at times but the love for Kira is always there. They have a strong connection which is one element that makes this story so deep and beautiful. Something else I like is how original and cool the character's names are and of course, we cannot forget the Art, the cover of To Nurture and Kill is gorgeous.
Overall, I enjoyed and loved the book a lot. I recommend a 100% both stories, The Deadbringer and To Nurture and Kill, and I cannot wait for the next book and see what else is in store for Eutau and Kira.
It's always nice to take a trip to another world that is different, and yet a little like ours as well. Nice to see how Kira got his start
Another amazing job done by the author. The writing style is unique and special. The story line is incredibly satisfying. I recommend this book and look forward to the next book by this author.
It is not often that I get the chance to read a book that is so well-written that it is hard to put down. E.M. Markoff has a remarkable gift for weaving multiple narratives together in a manner that is both satisfying and piquing to the reader's inquisitive nature. The broad range of characters that the author presents give the narrative aspects that will hit home and connect for many readers. I look forward to watching this author continue to grow and blossom in her talents as this series progresses.
This prequel to The Deadbringer, chronicles the origin story of how Eutau and Kira started off. Eutau has promised to care for the child Kira, who is not his own. However, Eutau has always been a free spirit who doesn't want to be tied down with anything, so how can he keep his promise and raise a young child? As Kira gets older, strange and dark powers manifest themselves through Kira, further unnerving him. Eutau knows that Kira is different, and may not survive without his help, but he also desperately wants to be free to do as he pleases.
One of my only complaints about The Deadbringer was that there was not much backstory about the characters or their environment before everyone was running for their lives. This book breathes life into Eutau and Kira, and makes their journey more poignant. Recommended.
